Savannah approves slight property tax reduction

Posted: Updated:

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - The Savannah City Council has approved a slight property tax decrease.

The Savannah Morning News reports ( that the decrease approved Thursday amounts to less than a half-percent reduction, but comes at a time when other area governments such as Chatham County have increased their tax rates.

Officials say the reduction from 12.50 to 12.48 mills is the "rollback" rate recommended by the state for offsetting increased values.

City Manager Stephanie Cutter said officials could afford the cut because the taxable value of property within the city increased by about 1.5% to $4.6 billion last year.
