Police: Man stole ambulance from police station

CHANDLER, Ariz. -

You hear a lot about stolen cars, but a stolen ambulance is pretty rare. What's even more uncommon is an ambulance stolen from a police department parking lot.

Authorities say a man stole an ambulance outside the Chandler Police Department after his release from custody on a misdemeanor citation Sunday.

Chandler police spokesman Joe Favazzo says 33-year-old Cesar Garcia of Guadalupe had driven the emergency vehicle to his home after he was released on a misdemeanor charge of having an open container -- only he didn't realize the ambulance had GPS.

"There is GPS on the ambulance and on top of that, they do stick out among traffic so probably not very subtle of him," says Officer Ashley Lewis, Chandler Police Department.

Garcia had just been released from jail and told police he had a ride coming to pick him up. But while waiting for that ride, he saw an ambulance, and seized the opportunity.

"An ambulance had been dispatched to the police station for a separate incident and Cesar Garcia got into the ambulance and drove away in it," says Lewis.

Garcia headed straight for his home in Guadalupe. Four minutes after Chandler Police alerted other police departments, Tempe Police spotted the vehicle and arrested Garcia.

"He was assigned a court date for the misdemeanor and now he racked up at least one felony in the span of ten minutes," says Lewis.

There is no damage to the ambulance and no one was hurt.

Garcia underwent a sobriety test to see whether or not he was under the influence while driving that ambulance. More charges could be possible.
