PHOENIX -

The family of the Maricopa County detention officer who was killed last week is speaking out.

Authorities say the suspect shot Jorge Vargas in the driveway of his home near 91st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road, then took off from the scene on foot -- and hasn't been seen since.

Vargas had been with the Sheriff's office for seven years.  He supervised inmates who worked in the jail's kitchen.

His brother-in-law says he was a family man and liked by everyone.

"He would be the one that would get the rest of the friends together.. he was the glue that kept all the guys together.. that's what we're gonna miss.. everything he brought to the table," said Luis Altamirano.

If you would like to help the family, an account has been set up at Wells Fargo under the Officer Vargas Memorial Fund.

If you have any information about this crime, contact the Phoenix Police at (602) 262-6151 or Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS.  You can remain anonymous and receive a cash award for tips leading to an arrest or indictment.
