ACWORTH, Ga. -

A high-speed police chase down I-75 south in Henry County Wednesday afternoon ended with an alleged kidnapper in custody and an 8-month-old boy safe and sound with his mother.

Police arrested 22-year-old Samantha Barrett after a pursuit that stretched from Henry County to Lamar County.

Authorities said that Barrett took off in Kristen Howard's car with Howard's young son, William Kaidyn Stover, inside.

"I went inside and grabbed a lighter -- I was going to take my friend to the store  -- and I come back outside and the car is gone," Howard said.

After the GBI issued an Amber Alert for the boy, a Henry County resident spotted the car driven by Barrett and called 911.

The accused kidnapper led officers on a chase that reached to I-75 southbound in Henry County before ending on the access road adjacent to Highway 36.

A man named Corey Pattillo was also in the car. He said that he met Barrett on Tuesday night and had helped her out by finding her a place to stay.  He said he then needed a ride, but said he had no idea that Barrett was being sought by police.

"She wouldn't stop when the police got behind. I kept telling her, ‘Pull over, pull over,' and she wouldn't do it," Pattillo said. "So I put the car in neutral and grabbed the wheel and we went to the side of the road and then she told me to get out. She was going for it, so I just jumped out."

Authorities used stop sticks, which brought Barrett's car to a sudden stop on the dirt road.

Police said that Barrett tried to run, but was tackled by officers.

The baby, who was inside the car, was unhurt.  He was reunited with his mother at police headquarters late Wednesday afternoon.

"He is happy as always. The way the car looks, I'm surprised he is alive," said Howard.

Barrett, who is said to be an acquaintance of Stover's mother, is being held at the Henry County Jail. She faces several charges in Henry and Bartow counties, including kidnapping and auto theft.

Barrett has a previous criminal record, and was in jail in Cobb County for about two weeks last month on a probation violation, Deidra Dukes reports.

Pattillo is not facing any charges, police said.
