DeKalb County honors officers, detectives

Posted: Updated:

DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander honored some of his best and bravest men and women in a ceremony on Wednesday.

Forty-four officers and detectives were given promotions and commendations for their outstanding service.
Alexander called for a moment of silence in memory of Officer Ivorie Klusmann, who died in a crash while pursuing a suspect last weekend.

Alexander said that he's lobbying the county commission for a 3 percent bonus for his officers.

"We're trying to do as much as we can to support our officers both financially and with resources," Alexander said.

The chief admits he has some trouble retaining officers lured away by other law enforcement agencies.

"You have those who take other opportunities where they may be compensated higher, and also you have those who just change careers," said Alexander.

Interim DeKalb County CEO Lee May was also on hand to congratulate the decorated officers. It's now his job to find the money for the proposed bonus.

"I am looking into that. It's all about working the numbers, making some tough decisions," May said.
On Tuesday, DeKalb commissioners voted to allow May to provide a bonus payment for all sworn public safety personnel within the county.
