Trial continues for officer accused of shooting unarmed man

PHOENIX -

Graphic crime scene photos were shown to the jury Wednesday as the lead detective testified in the Richard Chrisman trial.

The former Phoenix police officer is accused of shooting and killing an unarmed man and his dog.

The jury saw pictures of bullets found in Daniel Rodriguez's room. The defense is trying to prove Rodriguez was a threat before Richard Chrisman shot him.

Shotgun bullets and a nearly full box of ammunition were found in Daniel Rodriguez's room just after Richard Chrisman shot him.

"That is a box of ammunition the name brand is Magnum Tech," testified Det. Ken Porter.

Police say Rodriguez was unarmed when Chrisman shot and killed him. Defense attorneys are trying to prove Chrisman believed Rodriguez was a threat. They're also trying to poke holes in Officer Sergio Virgillo's testimony.

Officer Virgillo testified he was standing inside of the trailer when the shooting happened. Defense attorneys played audio of what Virgillo told detectives on the day it happened.

Question: "Where exactly are you if you can remember?"

Audio of Virgillo: "I'm standing... my feet are right on the edge of the doorway. I'm on the porch but my nose is hitting the inside of the trailer."

Daniel's mother Elvira Fernandez sat in the court room praying, her eyes closed. The graphic pictures of the crime scene shown to the jury were difficult for her to see.

Prosecutors also called a crime scene technician to the stand Wednesday afternoon. Her testimony will continue Thursday morning.
