HENRY COUNTY, Ga. -

The 22-year-old woman who triggered a statewide search for an 8-month-old boy and set Henry County police officers on a high-speed chase made her first court appearance Thursday morning.

Samantha Barrett is being held at the Henry County Jail. Officers took her into custody Wednesday afternoon. She faces several charges in Henry and Bartow counties, including kidnapping and auto theft.

The brief court appearance got underway at 8:45 a.m.  when Barrett, wearing red jail togs, walked into court room. She was kept toward a rear corner of the courtroom and requested a court-appointed attorney.

Henry County police charged Barrett with fleeing, attempting to elude police, cruelty to children and driving with a suspended driver's license, FOX 5 Atlanta's Marc Teichner reports.

Authorities say Barrett drove off in Kristen Howard's car with Howard's young son, William Kaidyn Stover, inside. Barrett is believed to be an acquaintance of Stover's mother

"I went inside and grabbed a lighter -- I was going to take my friend to the store -- and I come back outside and the car is gone," Howard said.

Authorities caught up with Barrett after a person in Henry County spotted and recognized the Barrett drove as being similar to the once cited in a Georgia Amber Alert for Stover. Henry Co. police were alerted and went after Barrett.

She fled in her car and took police on a wild ride on I-75 south in Henry County before ending on the access road adjacent to Highway 36. The high-speed chase reached 90 mph.

Authorities used stop sticks, which brought Barrett's car to a sudden stop on the dirt road.  Police said that Barrett tried to run, but was tackled by officers.

Bail was set for Barrett at $20,000.

The child had a brief reunion with his mother, but the Bartow County sheriff told FOX 5 that he has been placed in the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services. A hearing has been set for Friday.
