Domestic violence suspect holes up in Surprise home

Posted: Updated:

A SWAT team was called out to Surprise where a domestic violence suspect holed himself up inside of a home Thursday afternoon.

Officers were called out to the 14900 block of West Parkwood Drive on reports of an assault about 1:30 p.m. A woman was allegedly assaulted by her ex-boyfriend. She was able to flee the residence with her two children.

When officers arrived, he locked himself in the residence and refused to come out.

The 20-year-old apparently made statements about wanting to die by the hand of a policeman. He was seen waving a handgun through the window and in the garage.

After hours of negotiations, the suspect surrendered to SWAT. He was transported to a local hospital, believed to have ingested medication.

The suspect, identified as Paul Alegria III, is facing charges of assault-domestic violence and disorderly conduct.

Kingswood Elementary School bus drivers were advised to change their bus routes during the incident.
