Prosecutors display evidence taken from Officer Chrisman

Posted: Updated:

The trial continues for Richard Chrisman, the former Phoenix Police officer charged with second degree murder.

The central issue here is whether the victim Daniel Rodriguez was a threat to the officer who shot and killed him.

The officer says he was a threat, but the prosecution claims otherwise and today they brought out some evidence that didn't show clear signs of a struggle. The detective on the stand spent most of the day going over evidence taken from Richard Chrisman.

At one point Detective Jose Cisneros held up the officer's uniform.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez: "Were there any tears, any, if you will, items of disarray?"

Cisneros: "No."

Prosecutors are trying to prove that Daniel Rodriguez was not a threat when then-Phoenix Police Officer Richard Chrisman shot and killed him during a domestic violence call 3 years ago in south Phoenix. Police say Rodriguez was unarmed.

In court, the detective also showed the jury the officer's belt. Prosecutors showed a photo of Chrisman after the incident.

"Did you see any injuries to his neck?"

"Any scratched any abrasions?"

"Any injuries to his face?"

The prosecutor also focused on a pen and handcuff key still neatly placed in Chrisman's shirt pocket after the incident.

Defense attorneys are trying to prove Chrisman believed Rodriguez was a threat. They're also trying to poke holes in another officer's testimony. That officer was there when the shooting happened.

Later Thursday, a Phoenix forensic scientist who examined Officer Chrisman's uniform took the stand.

"What were the conclusions or the results as to whether there were any stains that were consistent with blood?"

"There were none located on the shirt."

Friday another staffer from the crime lab -- a firearms expert -- is expected to be back on the stand.
