ASU students move in to dorms

TEMPE, Ariz. -

ASU is coming to life as students move in. In fact, so many students are attending Arizona State's downtown Phoenix campus, some incoming freshmen are finding themselves in glamorous new digs.

This is Taylor Place. Today students who are part of ASU'S Barrett Honors College are moving in. The rest of this huge dorm is filling up in the next couple days.

It's tough in the heat, but students and their families seem to be enjoying the experience. A lot of lifting and stacking and pulling this morning. But new students had lots of help.

"We have movers and they are friendly. Typical type of move in, it is fun," says Melanie Abramoff, ASU student.

So many students are moving in downtown that Taylor Place will be full. The result is, 31 incoming freshmen will stay at the Westin Hotel just a block away. So far nobody's complaining.

"Well we have heard reports the students love it so much they do not want to come to Taylor Place, and they get maid service so I think it is pretty nice," says Marshall Terrill, ASU.

ASU is making the experience at the Westin dorm-like. Two students to a room, all the rooms together, with ASU staff at the hotel watching over the freshmen.

It's such a sweet deal you have to wonder if the other students are jealous.

"No, I am pretty glad I am here. The maid service would have been sort of nice, but it is nice being here," says student J.J. Williamson.

It can be stressful moving in, but it doesn't have to be if you follow some good advice.

"Enjoy the day. You only move in once. It's an exciting time they're becoming young adults and not to worry, they chose ASU, we are here to be of assistance," says Georgeana Montoya.

ASU says the students in the hotel should be moving out in a couple weeks. There's a natural attrition rate -- not everybody shows up, and spaces open up.
