Should you buy a gun for protection? FOX 32 takes an in-depth look

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

As Illinois laws change with regard to gun ownership and concealed carry, FOX 32 News takes an in-depth look at whether carrying a weapon is the right choice for you.

Every day this week, Good Day Chicago will explore a different aspect of this issue in FOX 32 reporter Anita Padilla's series of reports on "Ladies, Locked and Loaded," and go through the learning experience with a FOX Chicago News Facebook friend facing this dilemma.

To be clear - FOX 32 News is NOT advocating the use or purchase of guns. We just want to make sure you are armed with as much information as possible, as you look to answer the question yourself: Is owning a weapon for protection the right choice for you?

When FOX 32 News put this question on our Facebook page, the station was flooded with responses from women. Lisa Dattoo is one of them.

Dattoo is a mother, a travelling home health care nurse and an attack victim – twice now. She now says, she wants to be locked and loaded.

But the numbers don't add up for some. In fact, there are people who believe it's more likely you will be hurt by your own gun, than you hurting someone else.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania crunched the numbers in 2009. They found that those with firearms were about 4.5 times more likely to be shot than those who did not carry.

Still, Dattoo wants to arm herself. FOX 32 put helped her evaluate her initial skill level at a firearms training class. They showed this first-timer how to hold the weapon properly load it, fire it and own it responsibly.

All week long, FOX 32 News is looking at the aspects of being an informed and responsible gun owner if you are going to be one of those ladies, locked and loaded.

We've got the experts who will tell you things to consider when you buy a gun. Just because it's small and fits your hand, doesn't mean it'll protect you.

Ladies: If you are thinking about carrying a gun, where are you going to hide it? Would you be able to pull it out in time?

Are you mentally prepared to carry and shoot if you have to? Once that bullet leaves the gun, are you prepared for the questions by police investigators? Are you prepared to pay for an attorney?

Good Day Chicago will show you Lisa Dattoo's journey. Watch with us, join the discussion and decide what is right for you.

What questions do you have about gun safety or concealed carry? Are you considering buying a gun or have you purchased one recently?

We want to hear your thoughts. Post your comments on our FOX Chicago News Facebook page and we'll read some of your responses live on Good Day Chicago.
