Georgia reinstates 'charity tolls,' drops ban in 2 days

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Two days after enacting a ban on "charity tolls," Georgia officials have lifted the ban.

Three weeks ago, the State Road and Tollway Authority ended the random acts of kindness over liability concerns.

Deputy Executive Director Bert Brantley says some loose change heroes accused the toll booth cashiers on Georgia 400 of pocketing the extra change.

"They didn't think their pay it back gesture was making it back to the next person," Brantley said. "They were actually accusing our cashiers of either keeping that money or losing it or whatever."

The governor didn't like losing the pay it forward tradition on Georgia 400, so SRTA leaders approached their tollbooth cashiers, who came up with a solution they hope will make everyone happy.

"We're going to keep that money visible at all times for the customer if they leave it for the next person, said Brantley.

With no question about where the money is going, Georgia 400 can continue to live up to its nickname: Hospitality Highway.

Tolls are scheduled to end on Georgia 400 in November.
