Tech Check: Pet tech

These are the dog days of summer, even if it doesn't feel like it because of all the rain. And because of that, we thought it would be nice to profile technology to keep your pets safe, healthy and happy.

Tagg, the Pet Tracker is a collar with a built in GPS. You simply sets up a zone around the house and yard. If the dog leaves the zone, it will send you a notification instantly.

The notification can come in the form of an email or text messages that will be sent directly to your smartphone. You can then find the dog's current location on a map to help narrow down the search for the runaway pooch.

Tagg will also track your dog's activity in a similar, albeit slightly scaled down way, that the Jawbone Up that was profiled a few weeks ago does for us humans.

And it's not just for the dogs; the Tagg collar can also be used on cats.

Tagg, the Pet Tracker will run about $99 and the first three months of service are free. After that, it is $7.95 a month. For more information: pettracker.com

They say it's a dog eat dog world, but what dogs are really eating are table scraps. You would be surprised at the dietary difference between humans and canines, but a new app helps to shed some light on it.

It is called iKibble. The Apple-based app allows you to see what is actually harmful to man's best friend and what makes a good treat.

The iKibble app is $0.99 and is only available through the iTunes store for Apple devices.

Pets Next Door is like Facebook for your four-legged friend. The social networking site and app allows you to create a profile for your animal, send updates, add photos and blog about them. You can socialize with other pet owners in your neighborhood. And your pet can even flirt with others.

Pets Next Door is a free download for Apple and Android users. You can also use it through their website. For more information: petsnextdoor.com

This time last year, we were still posing the question: Should you buy a laptop of a tablet for you school aged child? That debate appears to be over and the tablets have won.
