CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

House Minority Leader Tom Cross is asking House Republicans to come up with a succession plan as he prepares to step down from his leadership post and consider a higher statewide office.

Cross talked to House Republicans in a call Wednesday where he informed them he's considering a bid for state treasurer.

He says an official announcement about his campaign plans will come in two weeks.

Republicans informed of Cross's plan confirm he'll seek a bid for treasurer, including Republican state Sen. Darin LaHood. He once considered a bid for treasurer but is now backing Cross.

The 55-year-old Cross first took office in 1993. He's been House GOP leader since 2002.

In a statement, Cross says being a GOP leader has been an immense privilege and a humbling honor.
