School district invests in safety with seat belts on buses

CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. -

Do you think your son or daughter would be more secure riding a school bus if they wore a seat belt?

According to the Georgia Department of Education, only one school district in the state has the safety feature on their school buses. SKYFOX Traffic's Katie Beasley went to Carrollton City Schools to find out why.

Records show about 42,000 people are killed each year in traffic crashes. But, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says only six of those account for children on school buses. Still, for many people that's still six too many!

Case in point, it's been about three years since a 17-year-old Carroll County student was ejected from his school bus when it ran into a ditch and overturned. The terrifying moments were even caught on surveillance camera.

A prevailing thought: A seat belt could have saved his life.

But, only one district in Georgia has them on their buses. Carrollton City Schools added them in 1992 – when they purchases the buses.

Craig Georgia, transportation director for Carrollton City Schools, said, "They wanted to make sure that the children were protected while riding a school bus."

Studies show that school buses are safer than other vehicles on the road because of the weight and absorbing compartment seats. Still, accidents can and do happen.

At $7,000 to $8,000 per bus, it's a big price tag for some of those school districts. And, for a large fleet of more than 100 buses, that cost can add up very quickly to total quite a bit of money.

Carrollton City Schools may be a trailblazer, but they hope they aren't the last school district to turn the focus on seat belts.

I think this is what many of us assume about outlet mall shopping -- we get rock bottom prices on everything from clothes to housewares on brand names that are either leftovers from last year or this year's overstock. Well, it's not quite like that.
