City looks to make parking safer around Georgia Dome

ATLANTA -

The city of Atlanta is looking at new regulations aimed at making it safer to park in areas around the Georgia Dome.

Atlanta City Councilmember Michael Bond said that he's heard complaints about unregulated parking lots outside of the dome.

"Once the spaces are full, the attendant is gone. So if you left a purse or laptop or something in your vehicle -- and sometimes it's an exploratory crime, they think you have something," Bond said. "You're coming back to that lot when it's dark and you might be a victim and nobody is accountable and police cannot enforce that because the private property owner may not be aware. "

Bond has drafted legislation that would establish rules for every parking lot. He wants them to have full-time attendants. He also wants every lot to have a bathroom. He'd like something to be done about garbage left around the lots as well.

"You have rodents, rats running around and unfortunately sometimes even the homeless will go through these bags and delving for food, so it really becomes a very deplorable situation," Bond said.

Bond is the chairman of the Public Safety Panel, which will take up the proposed legislation at its next meeting.
