Roswell community gets top nods for anti-crime efforts

Posted: Updated:
ROSWELL, Ga. -

In March 2012, Karina Campos had just started her job in management at Roswell Creek Apartment Community when she says she realized a very startling fact.

"I realized that the police were called almost everyday for different incidents that would happen in the community," she said.

Burglaries, robberies; crimes that the six-year resident Ada Ruiz says made her uncomfortable to live in her own neighborhood.

Ruiz said, "You go outside and you can't really be calm when you see people because you don't trust people. You don't know what's going on."

Campos says she decided to do something about it. She partnered with the Roswell Police Department and their crime-free housing program. The program works with management on a specific curriculum. It includes evicting anyone involved in criminal activity and environmental requirements.

Roswell Officer Jeremy Bringle said, "You have to keep your shrubs trimmed; that way burglars don't have a canopy."

Not only are police patrols a deterrent to crime, but officers become a part of the community. These actions and more resulted in a 60 percent drop in crime in 2012. It earned the community a gold award from Roswell PD – and, peace of mind fort he residents.

Apartment management also hired four off-duty police officers to work security. The officers work random hours to ensure criminals don't know when an officer will be there.
