Murder victim lay on front lawn for hours, only one Wayne Co. coroner working

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Devoe Tyreke Conley was 22-years-old when he was gunned down in his front lawn on Sunday. We're told the shooter drove up in a van, exchanged a few words, then shot Conley in the head.

Conley's family says police came immediately. EMS showed up shortly after, checked his pulse, then left. It was the Medical Examiner's Office that kept the family waiting for nearly six hours.

Fox 2 confirmed only one medical examiner unit works on the weekends. That's the unit that transports the dead bodies to the morgue, and that unit covers all of Wayne County.

We contacted the Wayne County Medical Examiner's office to find out why it took so long to pick up Conley's body. Conley's family says he was killed around 6PM. His body was not in the morgue until around 11PM.

The office says it didn't know about the body until 8PM, when it received word from Detroit Police to pick it up.

But Detroit Police tell Fox 2 whenever a body is declared dead, it's up to the Medical Examiner's Office to determine when to pick up the body. In this case, it was a decision that took about three hours to make.

Police say friends and family of Conley's were so upset over the delay they were ready to riot.

A representative from the coroner's office explained to us that Sunday night was a busy night. They picked up 12 other bodies besides Conley's.
