Teacher fired after forcing student to read sexually explicit passage aloud

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A sexually explicit classroom reading assignment has an Aurora teacher in hot water and out of a job.

The teacher, who was a substitute at Waubonsie Valley High School, told students in a sophomore English class on Friday that the assignment would be a good "ice breaker," according to a parent familiar with what happened.

Students were each asked to read a paragraph out loud, from something entitled "Life Story" by David Shields, an apparent collection of bumper sticker quotes which starts out innocently enough with: "You're only young once, but you can be immature forever."

Further in the poem, however, the language gets very crude and sexually graphic. The tamest part of the paragraph though, which a 16-year-old girl had to read out loud, includes the lines: "I'm looking for love but will settle for sex. Bad boys have bad toys. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but whips and chains excite me."

The student was mortified, according to a parent who spoke with her, and subjected to snickers and laughter by boys in the class.

We showed the entire paragraph in question to a classmate's mother, who wondered what the teacher was thinking.

"I don't know what his intention was with it, but I just don't feel that was something appropriate and I will speak to the school about it because that's not something they should be reading and be forced to read at that," Latrice says.

District administrators said the teacher exercised "poor judgment" in bringing what they called inappropriate material into the classroom.

"The material was not part of the district's curriculum...." according to a statement from District 204.

On Monday, after relieving the sub of his duties, the statement said "Administrators took steps to ensure the person will not work in any of the district's schools."
