Curb-side recycling program may make its way to Detroit

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (myFOXDetroit.com) -

Detroit residents have always been without the services of curb-side recycling. Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr is taking bids for a waste disposal contract until September 10th to privatize the city's garbage collection. If one of those bids is accepted, residents could soon welcome recycling pick-up.

"There needs to be effective curb-side recycling in the city of Detroit. Just providing everybody with a blue bin doesn't mean Detroit has a recycling program. It just means everyone has a blue bin," Matthew Naimi tells Fox 2's Robin Schwartz. Naimi serves as the Director of Operations at 'Recycle Here,' a warehouse on Holden that provides do-it-yourself recycling services.

For now, this warehouse serves as one of the only means for Detroiters to recycle. Residents bring their items here and sort their own materials, rather than sending their recyclables to the trash to end up in the incinerator.

"If you're going to bring Detroit back, you have to offer some idea that we're in the 21st century. Recycling is very, very important. I've been doing it for 25 years," Paula Ford tells us. She visits the warehouse weekly.

Since it's opening in 2007, 'Recycle Here' has served 300,000 people and recycled 10-million pounds of waste.

All the materials go to various different companies. Some of it is sold, and the money that's raised goes to a green educational program in Detroit Public Schools.
