Dolphins & Whales Enjoy The Local Surf...Together!

Posted: Updated:

"Dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!" Remember that classic Bill Murray line from Ghostbusters, describing the end of the world? Well, something nearly as rare was happening Tuesday in the Southern California ocean off Dana Point in Orange County. Several dolphins and a blue whale were playing together!

A pod of bottlenose dolphins were surfing off the front of a blue whale as it swam through the water. Passengers and crew members on Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari witnessed the event, and they sent us the video to prove it really happened.

Captain Dave Anderson says that even though blue whales and bottlenose dolphins swim in some of the same oceans, they don't run in the same social circles and are not typically seen together. Anderson says "this kind of a free ride is possible for these dolphins by positioning themselves in front of this rare and endangered whale and riding the pressure wave created by the force of this giant moving through the water."

These are the same type of dolphins that played "Flipper" in the classic TV show. They tend to be about 8 to 12 feet long, while blue whales are 70 to 100 feet long. The whales are plentiful in Southern California this time of year - between June and October - as they feed on krill, a small shrimp-like crustacean.

Whale watchers of all ages can see blue whales plus mega-pods of wild dolphins on daily trips aboard Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari's catamaran sailboat. You can also see live feeds of his trips at www.WhaleWatchingTV.com.

Happy sailing.
