Fire torches home, kills 4 pets

A family is mourning the loss of four pets after their home outside Avondale caught on fire early Wednesday morning.

Collin Williams with Rural Metro Fire says the family of four was asleep around 2:45 a.m. when one of them woke up, heard a big pop and then saw flames and smoke on the patio.

Williams says the homeowner originally thought he was woken up by a storm, but quickly found out his house, near Avondale and Southern, had caught fire.

There are no fire hydrants near the home, so fire crews had to shuttle water from other hydrants using their fire truck.

"Because we are in an area that's a county island out here, rural area, there are no hydrants so it was necessary to bring in water from a nearby hydrant," said Williams.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control, but two cats and two dogs were lost in the blaze. The family's horses and tortoise weren't harmed.

"My granddaughter got her puppy but we didn't get the other pets. We didn't get anyone else, the smoke was a foot off the floor by the time I got everyone to the front door," said Randy Huron.

Williams says the attic was fully engulfed in flames and a lot of items were burned inside.

There will be an ongoing investigation to figure out the cause of the fire. The family says they are fortunate to have made it out alive.
