Phoenix nonprofit providing aid to Syrian refugees

Posted: Updated:

The ongoing violence in Syria has made many neighborhoods unlivable. In some places, there's a lack of food, sanitation and health care.

A non-profit group based in Phoenix is doing what it can to help. It's called "Food for the Hungry."

The group works with local agencies and international organizations to combine resources. They provide food aid and other assistance, like hygiene kits, blankets and shelter.

Supplies go to the millions of refugees both inside and outside of Syria who are displaced.

"It's an enormous humanitarian crisis. It's one of the largest of our time and it is certainly one that is very disconcerting for a whole bunch of reasons. certainly the obvious political reasons and a very unstable region of the world, but the actual humanitarian aspect of this is very very profound and it is influencing affecting not only the Syrians who are displaced but their neighbors, because none of these communities has the capacity to handle the kind of flow of refugees that we're seeing coming out of Syria, into Lebanon and Jordan in particular but also Turkey and now into Iraq," said Marty Martin, chief operating officer, Food for the Hungry.

Food for the Hungry is always looking to partner with local organizations, and it relies on donations for its humanitarian efforts around the world.
