PCH patient's 4th year designing fundraiser Christmas cards

The annual Phoenix Children's Hospital Christmas card fundraiser is underway. The cards will be sold starting Nov. 1 in Safeway stores and online.

As you thumb through the cards, you'll see different designs all done by PCH patients.

Rosie Garcia's poinsettia tree is one of them; it's her fourth year as a featured artist.

"I was like, 'Oh, it's such an honor.' I heard about it before from other kids and I was like, 'Oh that sounds like fun,' I was like, 'Yeah, I could do that'," said Garcia.

Her relationship with PCH began back in March 2005. She was just 15-years-old when she was diagnosed with a brain stem tumor.

"It was actually spring break, so I was actually at home relaxing and one morning I woke up with my arm wailing and my face twitching uncontrollably," said Garcia.

"My mom took me to the nearest hospital, the doctors are like, 'I think I know what it is.' He did an MRI and I had two fluid golf ball-sized on my brain. When they relieved those when I got here they found a big mass behind that," she continued.

Since then, she has had 80 percent of it removed and braved years of chemo and radiation, all while staying positive and smiling.

"My tumor is basically stable, but now I am having side effects from the radiation and chemo. Basically, I am going deaf in one ear and blind in one eye," said Garcia.

She has eternal gratitude for the nurses and doctors at PCH.

"All the nurses were so kind, the doctors were so kind, even when I was so cranky, they would talk to me with the sweetest care and they were great," said Garcia.

"The doctors and the nurses are my heroes. Without them I would not be here," said Garcia. "I hope I can motivate other children. Hey, you can still live with cancer, you can still have your life and motivate other kids and say, 'Hey, I'm still here and kicking and I am not going to let this cancer take me or beat me'."

The Christmas cards will be sold starting in November.
