2 council seats headed for runoff elections

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Four city council seats were up for grabs in Tuesday's election, and two of those races came too close to call.

Two runoff races are scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 5 -- in District 4, Justin Johnson vs. Laura Pastor, and in District 8, Kate Gallego vs. Warren Stewart.

To participate, Phoenix residents have until Monday, Oct. 7 to register to vote.

In District 2, Jim Waring beat out Virgel Cain with 76 percent of the vote. In District 6, Sal DiCiccio beat out Karlene Keogh Parks with 54 percent of the vote.

To be elected, a candidate must receive a majority of the votes cast for the office, which is 50 percent of the votes, plus one.

A total of 78,547 ballots were tabulated -- of those, 74,343 were early ballots. That's a voter turnout number of 23.43 percent.

The votes will be officially canvassed on September 4, and the council members will be sworn in on Jan. 2, 2013.
