DUI task force arrests 375 over Labor Day weekend

Posted: Updated:

The Labor Day weekend isn't even over yet, but a lot of people have been arrested for DUI across the state.

Officers are reminding drivers they'll still be out through Monday, looking for impaired drivers.

In Scottsdale alone, there were more than 20 people arrested since Friday.

At one of many DUI task force vans, those arrested got a blood test, fingerprints were taken and they were cited and released.  Taxis were on site waiting to take those arrested home for the night.

We spoke to one sergeant and he says drivers have a misconception of what impaired driving really is.

"The difference between drunk and impaired is obviously is impaired is you know you're buzzed..you're feeling good..and a lot of the people don't think that that's a violation of the law to drive while they're in that state, so that's one of the messages we try to get across to people. Driving impaired is what the law is.. and that's what we want to do is prevent people from making those fine motor skill mistakes while they're driving a motor vehicle to cause serious injury and fatality collisions," said Sgt. Tom Jensen of the Scottsdale police.

A driver told FOX 10, "We left the bar.. me and some buddies... and I will never do it again."

So far, more than 370 motorists have been arrested for driving under the influence. Nearly a third of those were for extreme DUI, which means their blood alcohol level was at least twice the legal limit.

On Monday night, Mesa police will continue their DUI saturation 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.  Salt River police will continue their DUI checkpoints from 3:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
