Cochise County Sheriff's deputies working a DUI checkpoint in southeast Arizona arrested a man on Saturday who was a passenger in a stolen truck.

Deputies say a 2001 black Chevrolet Silverado bore a license plate belonging to a 1969 truck. They initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver failed to yield to deputies.

The vehicle eventually stopped and the driver fled on foot. The passenger was taken into custody.

The passenger was identified as 37-year-old Ellis Jon Mathis, who admitted he was homeless.

He was booked on an outstanding warrant from Sierra Vista Justice Court on charges of forgery and theft, an outstanding warrant from Colorado on charges of crimes against person, and a new charge of possession of marijuana.

The vehicle was stolen out of Washington and deputies are trying to locate the driver of the vehicle at this time.
