Heavy rain, Flood Warnings soak parts of North Georgia

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A strong rain system pushed through metro Atlanta, soaking the morning commute for many who still have to get to work on Monday's Labor Day holiday.

By 7:15 a.m., a healthy downpour could be seen in Mableton, Smyrna, Vinings and many neighboring areas. FOX 5 Meteorologist Paul Milliken said it was only the beginning as FOX 5 Storm Team's Live Vipir showed more wet weather on the way throughout the day.

Earlier in the morning, the National Weather Service declared Flash Flood Warnings in Haralson County, Ga., and Cleburne County, Ala. – both until 12 p.m. Monday. Both expired at noon.

Rainfall totals in north Georgia climbed quite a bit from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. Monday. The system dumped upwards of four inches of rain in just three hours in places like Carroll County.  At one point, Tallapoosa and Villa Rica sustained rainfall adding up to four inches an hour.

Showers and storms will continue tonight as the front pushes toward the region. Though the storms will decrease in intensity with the loss of daytime heating; rain and storms could still be an issue by Tuesday daybreak.

Overnight lows will settle in the lower 70s.  Remaining showers Tuesday morning will push south, moved out of the way by the drier air mass behind the cold front.

That means the day will become quite pleasant by Tuesday afternoon, with mainly sunny skies and highs in the upper 80s.

Wednesday and Thursday are looking beautiful, with highs in the middle to upper 80s and lots of sunshine.

A chance for rain/storms starts to build again toward the weekend -- but for now the activity looks like it will be isolated in nature, leaving most of the weekend to be a pleasant one.  Have a great, safe holiday!
