Officers search for man who fired upon officers

Posted: Updated:

Tempe and Phoenix Police officers are looking for a man who fired two rounds at a police officer Monday night.

About 8:30 p.m., a Tempe patrol officer stopped in the area of 45th Street and Broadway to examine a vehicle believed to be involved in a carjacking.

"There was a carjacking that occurred in Tempe, this particular officer was here looking to see if that vehicle was in fact here at that location," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.

"He did locate the vehicle. As he's checking the vehicle - he stepped out of his vehicle to look at it - there was a number of shots that came from a residence near by."

An unknown person jumped out of a second story window and fired at least two rounds at the officer, police said. The officer did not return fire.

"This officer was not injured during this incident.. this officer requested assistance.. we have a number of police personnel out here including Phoenix police and Tempe police," said Martos.

Police set up a perimeter around the area to search for the suspect who ran back into the residence. They blocked off several blocks and asked residents to stay in their homes.

About 10 p.m., police said they located the condo where the shots originated from, and were trying to figure out if the shooter is inside. About 12:30 p.m., the Tempe SWAT team entered the home, but no one was inside.

At this point, police can't say for sure if the suspect was involved in last week's carjacking.

"It is possible that this suspect is related to the carjacking.  We don't know and that's something we're looking into," said Tempe Police Sgt. Mike Pooley.

The suspect has been described as a black male in his late teens or early 20s, wearing a black tank top and basketball shorts.

"We believe somebody out there has some information.. knows who this individual is and will help us," said Martos.
