All Aboard: Pine Mountain train fulfills boy's dream

VILLA RICA, Ga. -

Villa Rica is known as the site of Georgia's first gold rush, but these days, something else is rushing through town. The brand-new Pine Mountain Scenic Railroad is set to open this week!

It's already gotten a trial run from a very special little boy. You've heard of the popular children's story, "The Little Engine That Could." This is the story of the little engineer that could

Three-year-old Wynn McBrayer recently got the ride of a lifetime thanks to a community that stands strong behind him.  Wynn is a train lover, balloon animal enthusiast and-- to his family-- a miracle child.

Wynn was born with a rare heart defect. The connections between his heart and lungs are almost non-existent.  Doctors told his family that he'd never even walk.

"Right before his first birthday, they put him on Hospice in Atlanta, and just said, ‘He's not gonna survive.'  You know? No more,"  said his mom, Ellen McBrayer.

A life-saving surgery in Boston, however, changed that. But for Wynn, the surgeries will never stop.  He and his mom are headed back to Boston.

Meanwhile, the folks at Pine Mountain Gold Museum wanted to send him off in style.

"They said, ‘He really loves trains,' and I said, ‘Boy, have I got a deal for him!'" explained Villa Rica resident Jeff Reese on the day of Wynn's ride.  "So we rushed up to get the passenger car up there, just minutes before you got here today."

For the day, Wynn was the little engineer who could-- giving the inaugural ride a big thumbs up from his own little hand. The ride only lasted about 15 minutes, but for Wynn and his family that 15 minutes was a lifetime.

"They can't tell us how long we'll have him, but we've already had him three years longer than what they ever said was possible," said his mom.

The train, by the way, is one that used to be featured at Bremen's Rocky Branch Railroad attraction.

Sometimes less can be more! A small space shouldn't limit your garden or your imagination—hanging baskets, containers, window boxes, espaliered fruit trees….they're all great ways to made a big gardening impact – even on the most limited high rise balcony!
