NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey's Democratic candidate for governor says a comment she made about Gov. Chris Christie "frolicking" in the ocean was not a mocking reference to his weight.

State Sen. Barbara Buono was criticizing a $2 million shore tourism ad campaign that features Christie when she said, "I don't know about you, but seeing Chris Christie frolicking on the beach is not going to drive me to go to the shore."

Christie called the comment derisive Tuesday.

But Buono's camp says she was trying to call attention to problems at the shore 10 months after Superstorm Sandy.

Christie, the 50-year-old governor and potential 2016 Republican presidential contender, has long struggled with his weight — and has joked about it, too.

He is noticeably slimmer since undergoing gastric band surgery in February.
