Tech Check: Slingbox

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Fall is almost here and so are the sports and new network shows. So many shows and events that you wouldn't ever need to leave your couches. But life outside the living room calls, so it might just be easier for you to take their television with you.

Why not take television with you? If you have cable, you are paying for it anyway, but you can't possibly be home all the time watching it. So, how can you take it with you?

A Slingbox. It's a product that has been around for a long time, but now a new model, the Slingbox 500, brings you even more features as well as incredible high-definition video to your mobile devices.

Now, anything that you can do with your cable box at home, you can do by using a Slingbox. In addition to the incredible streaming quality, the video lets you pause live television, rewind it or fast-forward back to real time. It is just like being at home.

Whatever is playing on your set at home can now stream to your mobile device. With such services as Netflix and YouTube, the option is getting more popular.

A Verizon Wireless spokesperson tells FOX 5 News that in Atlanta, mobile streaming has increased 150 percent from this time last year. Most of those new mobile watchers are avid sports fans.

At home, more than 85 percent of smartphone and tablet users say they use the devices as a second screen while watching their televisions at the same time.

The Slingbox 500 sells for around $299. You will need to buy a separate app for your smartphone or tablet that will run you about $14.99 for each device. After the one-time fee, you are in with no recurring charges outside of your normal internet and mobile plans.

And one side note, if you do use mobile streaming a lot, you will want to make sure you keep an eye on your data usage each month.
