Sign of a confident job market? More people are quitting their jobs

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Feel like quitting your job? You're not alone. More than 2 million people in the United States have done just that and employment experts believe this is a sign of a more confident job market.

After several years of working at a travel website, Blagica Bottigliero knew something was wrong.

"I was so into my job. It was a 24/7 thing and when I take a job of any sort, I'm all in," Bottigliero explains. "It consumed me and I knew I needed a mental break."

So after a year of saving, she decided to quit her job.

"My parents being European immigrants from Macedonia, freaked out. How much money have you saved? Why did you quit? My friends thought I was crazy," she says.

She traveled to France, rode the Queen Mary 2, and explored New York for several months. That was nearly 9 years ago.

Fast forward to 2013, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says in July, 2.3 million people did exactly the same: quit their jobs. That is close to the 2.7 million people that also quit back in 2007, just before the recession.

"It's a real milestone because it says the number of people now, who feel confident enough to quit their jobs and go out into the job market or test the waters with a new job, is back to where we were before the recession started and things were really going well," says employment expert John Challenger.

Bottigliero now runs her own digital brand growth agency in Chicago and doesn't regret dropping everything at one point in her life.

"I know now that was probably the best thing that I did for myself as a corporate citizen, as a woman, as a future wife, as a future mother," Bottigliero says of having no regrets. "Because I took that time and I saw the other side of what life could be like."

Employment experts say the labor market is strong when people and companies are willing to take chances. They also add that it's a sign the housing market is improving as people choose to leave their homes for jobs in other cities.
