Cops: Aide for disabled stole $19,000

PORT JEFFERSON STATION, N.Y. (AP) - A former employee of a Long Island agency that provides care for developmentally disabled people is facing theft charges.

Suffolk County police say Samantha Cuomo is facing arraignment Wednesday on a grand larceny charge. The name of her attorney was not immediately known.

Police say that between January 2012 and last March, Samantha Cuomo used accounts for clients of the Maryhaven Center of Hope.

They say the money was used to pay for personal items, including spa treatments and purchases at a dress shop.

The discrepancies were found by an employee performing an audit of Maryhaven accounts.

A Maryhaven spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Police say the 28-year-old woman has been fired from her job as a house manager.
