Police, MCSO want to curb underage drinking, wild parties in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. -

Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies are working with Tempe police officers have joined forces to stop alcohol violence and crimes which have spiked in the city this year.

Some of those crimes are associated with underage drinking, out of control fraternity parties and drunk people on Mill Avenue -- but it is so out of hand that the Tempe Police Department felt a big show of force was necessary.

"What we are seeing this year is a lot of increased violence.. people not only to enjoy themselves but to excess whether if it's party patrol or alcohol.. if we can cut these things off early, we can prevent aggravated assaults, sexual assaults.. a lot of crimes we're hoping to prevent by cutting these things off early," said Sgt. Steve Carbajal.

The operation will crack down on drinkers and is focused on a two mile radius around the Arizona State University campus. It will continue through the weekend.
