Warren officers shoot suspects in robbery attempt

Posted: Updated:
WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) -

Police say officers shot and wounded two men in Warren who were attempting to break into a tobacco store to steal cigarettes.

Commissioner Jere Green says the officers responded to calls of the break-in in the area of 9 Mile and Van Dyke Friday morning to find a van racing away from the scene. Officers fired shots at the van after its driver attempted to run over an approaching officer. Green says two suspects were each struck in the arm.

One of the wounded men was treated and released to police while the other was expected to have surgery for his wounds at a hospital.

Green says a third suspect in the vehicle was taken into custody.

The suspects are believed to have been involved in two earlier smash-and-grabs.

Police say surveillance cameras likely captured the incident on video.
