Deserving Iraq War Veteran Receives House

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX -

There's no one who's more deserving of a safe place to call home. Today a war veteran and Purple Heart recipient was given a house in Phoenix.

The marine you're about to meet served two tours in Iraq and survived an IED explosion.

Bank of America spent $43,000 fixing up the home they presented Friday.

As his new fiance Susan unlocks the door, veteran Adam Picas can already imagine what will take place between these walls.

"A whole lot of happiness, just growing a family and making things better than they could ever be," says Adam.

Things haven't been easy. Adam's first tour of Iraq was in 2002 during the initial invasion, followed by a second, more intense tour.

"The second time was more like Blackhawk Down, a lot of street fighting, that's where I received my Purple Heart was the second tour. I was actually blown up by an IED blast in the firefight, I was lucky enough that my body armor took majority of the shrapnel."

You can't see his wounds, but the 30-year-old suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Bank of America and the Military Warriors Support Foundation found a quiet rural neighborhood in north Phoenix for the marine corporal to begin the rest of his life.

"The house is huge and it's nice there's no neighbors outside your bedroom window, no one living above you."

Adam immediately knew what he wanted to fill a space above the mantle with. He got a flag earlier this week that was flown at the Twin Towers.

"It looks great it's perfect."

Adam plans to fly the Marine Corps flag in his new front yard.

Adam chose to come to Arizona because his best friend from combat lives here. He's also interested in getting a degree at ASU.
