Tech Check: iOS7 launch

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A big chunk of the Apple world will be downloading the new iOS7 this week. It is an update of the operating system on iPhones, iPads and iTouches. It is a free update to users, but there are some things to know about it.

First, the operating system has a new control center. The control center is a swipe up where you change the big settings. This makes things like turning on and off Bluetooth easier. It also has a built-in flashlight function now.

Next, while it is slightly boring, the notification system has been redesigned. Notifications is still a swipe down and you can see daily reminders as well as emails, tweets, Facebook posts and an integrated map application. Also, a lot of the problems with maps in the previous iOS is reportedly solved in iOS7.

And something new you can groove to is iTunes Radio. If you use Pandora, Slacker or Spotify, you might want to give this a try. The internet radio from iTunes can be accessed from you Apple device.

Fourth, there is an airdrop. This is a way for you to share pictures or documents to another Apple user without using texts or emails.

And finally, there will be multi-tasking. This is huge improvement for Apple who has been getting ripped in Microsoft Windows 8 commercials about this very thing. There's now a preview of what is open on the application so you can see what you are closing instead of just closing the icon for that app.

The iOS7 launch is Wednesday. There is a list of Apple devices that can use it at facebook.com/DougEvansFOX5.

This time last year, we were still posing the question: Should you buy a laptop of a tablet for you school aged child? That debate appears to be over and the tablets have won.
