Chicago Police racking up millions in overtime

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Chicago police officers racked up more than $57 million in overtime during the first six months of 2013 - more than $31 million of that on a program that saturates dangerous neighborhoods with hundreds of officers every night.

NBC-5 Chicago reports that a Freedom of Information request showed that the $57.1 million has been spent on overtime. That's nearly twice as much money as the mayor's budget projected the department would need for overtime for the whole year.

Police and others say a significant drop in homicides - 297 as of Sept. 8 compared to 377 for the same period last year - shows the effort is working. Superintendent Garry McCarthy says he expects overtime costs to fall because more newly sworn officers are hitting the streets.
