US Park Police helicopter provides crucial eye in the sky during Navy Yard shooting

WASHINGTON -

It's what they train to do.

"Are they aware that they're going into harm’s way? They're police officers. They're trained to run in when everybody else is running out," says U.S. Park Police Aviation Commander Simeon Klebaner.

And his team did just that on Monday. They flew for nearly four hours -- hovering above Navy Yard Building 197.

Their first job was to look for the shooter and provide intelligence to officers on the ground.

Then, a woman who had been shot in the shoulder had lost a lot of blood and needed to be airlifted from the roof of the building.

They removed three other uninjured people from the roof too. All while an officer hanging in the doorway provided cover with an M16 rifle.

"When you boil down everything else, those people were in a bad situation and that's what we do. We get people out of the bad situations," said Sgt. Ken Burchell.
