10th Grader Busted With 81 Bags Of Heroin At Upper Darby High

Posted: Updated:
UPPER DARBY, Pa. -

"This is a first."

That's what Upper Darby Police say about what they found inside a teenage student's back pack when. This all happened when a bike officer approached the teen earlier this week near the baseball fields at Upper Darby High School. The teen dropped the bag and took off.

"When you see a 16 year old kid, a student in the school, with 81 bags of heroin and $716 in cash, that shows that he's dealing," Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood told FOX 29.

Inside the sophomore student's bag was the usual stuff, a hall pass and some math homework. But it was the 81 bundled packets of heroin, the cash, some blunts and a cell phone that made police give chase.

"Preliminarily, there's text messages, I'll meet you in a certain area. I need two, where can I meet ya," Chitwood explained.

Now police are checking surveillance video and the teen's cell phone to see if he was selling heroin on school grounds, a drug free school zone. Chitwood admits that he's worried.

"It is an issue that has exploded in the last several years," Chitwood said. "It's frightening and it's concerning, but I truly believe that with us and the schools working together, we'll have a real quick impact on what the issue is."

"Where's the security at, " one parent asked.

Parents from Upper Darby heard about the heroin bust from school officials overnight. They are deeply concerned, not only for the own kids, but for young people who may be using the habit-forming and potentially deadly drug.

"Especially heroin. Heroin's the worst drug you can take. Destroys. It'll destroy you," said Rocky Tassone.

"I'll be honest with you, it makes me sick to my stomach and I really hope they take care of this," Betsy Eller told FOX 29.

"Where's the security at if the kids are selling drugs on the property," another parent said.

One officer suffered a broken ankle while giving chase to the teenager. The teenager had to be tased so that police could subdue him. The officer hurt will need surgery.

Upper Darby was one of the first districts to hold an open forum on heroin and prescription drug use.

An email about the heroin bust was sent home to parents overnight.

Chitwood says that there have been 30 to 40 heroin deaths in Upper Darby in the past two years, even more county-wide. He says police and the school district will work together to crack down on drugs getting into schools or onto school property.
