Crossfit controversy: Is it ok for pregnant women?

A simple tweet showing a California woman's exercise routine quickly turned into a firestorm of negativity on the internet.

This is Lee Ann Ellison. She's pregnant -- two weeks from her due date -- but still doing her the strenuous crossfit exercises.

Her doctor said it's ok, but people who saw this didn't think so.

We went to Core Crossfit in Phoenix Friday, where they've had a couple women work out throughout their pregnancy. We met up with one new mom who actually competed just weeks before her due date.

At 8 months pregnant Stephanie Goduti was not only doing crossfit, this YouTube video shows her competing in the cross-fit games.

"There was definitely some shock and awe when I was competing I think people thought I was going there just to watch," says Goduti.

Goduti had been doing crossfit two years before she got pregnant. But the operating room nurse says she knows her body.

"If it was something uncomfortable I would have backed off."

The owner of Goduti's crossfit gym says they don't let pregnant women do crossfit if they haven't done it before, and those who have are asked to consult their doctor.

"Basically we ask everybody to talk to their physician and get physical clearance as they continue their workouts," says Kim Flores, owner of Core Crossfit.

"I wasn't going quite as heavy with the weights I was doing before," Goduti admits.

We're told, even at 8 and a half months pregnant, Goduti was out-lifting some of the men there.

Recently, photos and video of pregnant women doing crossfit sparked outrage. Some were concerned the workout was too intense. Goduti says she too was criticized when her video was posted.

"People said it was ridiculous I was doing crossfit and unsafe and how could you be doing that to your child and I just think its ignorance."

Goduti did crossfit up until the week before she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. He's now 5 months old and Goduti is back doing workouts.

"I had an extremely easy pregnancy and labor. The weight went down and came off within a week and a half."

An obgyn told us exercise is important and says any type of training your body is used to is ok to do while pregnant.

Doctors, of course, are concerned about certain positions and high heart rates while working out.
