Camp Casey celebrates 50th "Horsey House-Call"

A 5-year old boy battling Leukemia rode a horse for the very first time on Saturday. The occasion also marked a special moment for a local non profit.

Fox 2 cameras were rolling when Alex Eshelman got a surprise he will always remember thanks to the good folks at Camp Casey. When Alex opened his front door on Saturday morning he was greeted by a full grown horse. This was the 50th "horsey house call" by Camp Casey in 8-years. Hooper the Pistons mascot was also on hand to celebrate the milestone.

Camp Casey is known for its unique riding program for children with cancer. So far the group has put smiles on the faces of more than a thousand kids since its inception. Kids just like Alex. He was diagnosed with cancer in August of 2012 and is currently in remission. Saturday was his one year anniversary.

Ed Eshelman, Alex's dad says, "He's taken a lot of medications that have side affects and a lot of times he's tired, fatigued, or battling colds. His immune system isn't very strong because of the chemotherapy. This is a wonderful treat for him."

"Horses are very magical animals and when kids are able to interact with the animal, the volunteers and their friends they feel special. They feel empowered. It comes at a time when a lot of the power can be taken away from them," added Molly Reeser, Camp Casey Program Director.

This was the 17th horsey house call this summer alone. Camp Casey will celebrate its 10th anniversary later this year. The non profit is always looking for donations and volunteers.
