Update: Vietnam veteran's treasures returned

Posted: Updated:
HAZEL PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -

A diary and other treasures belonging to a Vietnam War veteran are now back where they belong - with his family. As we first told you last weekend, a Hazel Park couple found the items and contacted Fox 2 hoping to find the rightful owner. Then, the story took a few turns.

If a picture is worth a thousand words then these are worth millions. There was a family reunion of sorts at Scout Park in Hazel Park Saturday where Alicia and Angela Currie received countless family photos, jewelry and their dad's journal from his tour in Vietnam.

"It was just overwhelming," said one of the Currie sisters. "I owe the Wallaces the deepest debt of gratitude."

Larry Wallace found all of the items in the trash after Angela's rental property went into foreclosure. He told us he wanted to give them back. But for awhile it seemed like that might not happen. Larry left a voicemail saying he took the property to a lawyer to have it appraised and would later decide whether to hand it over. The sisters were floored. But, Larry says the voicemail was really meant to stop people from showing up at his house saying the property belonged to them. He says he always intended to give it back and that has now taken place.
