Investigators suspicious after several fires start in Phoenix neighborhood


Phoenix Fire is investigating after two cars, an alley and another area caught fire within a half-mile on Thursday morning.

The fires occurred between 2 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. in the area of 28th Street to 36th Street and Thomas Road to Indian School Road.

Firefighters say three of four cases are confirmed to be arson. They're still investigating the other case. 

No one was injured during the fires.

Homeowners at an apartment near 36th Street and Thomas smelled something strange on Wednesday night, but fire crews weren't able to find anything.

Sometime early Thursday morning, the home caught on fire while the owners were still away. When they returned home, the apartment was engulfed in flames.

Fire crews originally believed the apartment was included with the car arsons, but have determined it was accidental.

The homeowners are and firefighters found cigarettes and matches near the couch, where they think the fire started.
