Alternative treatments that may ease your allergies

TEMPE, Ariz. -

The temperatures are starting to drop and often times when there's a change in the weather, allergy sufferers feel it and it can be miserable.

Two popular alternative treatments are acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments.

It's the season of sneezing and wheezing, but there are alternative ways to treat those nasty allergies.

"Acupuncture doesn't give you dry nasal passages, extra thirst, it doesn't give you drowsiness, any of those side effects people get from drugs," said Don Matesz, M.S., L.Ac., with Barefoot Acupuncture Clinic.

Acupuncturists say their methods open up nasal passages without harmful side effects.

With about 10 needles throughout her body, FOX 10's Jessica Flores says she felt very relaxed.

The treatment should help the pressure in her nose.

Afterward, she says she had a little relief in her nasal passages.

Next, she headed to a chiropractor to see some of the techniques they use to deal with allergies.

"We look to decrease the amount of inflammation in the body through the use of adjustments, so you can better accommodate your allergies rather than having to go to the over the counter prescription meds," said Steven Knauf, D.C. with The Joint.

The chiropractor works to reduce allergy inflammation by adjusting the neck.

Both acupuncturists and chiropractors agree their methods aren't for serious cases.

"We are not talking about anaphylactic shock, go to hospital for that," said Matesz.

There's very little hard medical evidence that the alternatives work for everyday allergies, but then again, there's always word of mouth.

"Really that's the best we can do. The patients are the ones who go out and really tell their story and that's what we have to rely on right now, is the patients reaction to treatments," said Knauf.

Before trying any treatments you should consult your doctor.
