Affordable Care Act (Obamacare): The Basics

The government is now providing health insurance to those who are uninsured. Here are the basics to understanding the Affordable Care Act.

What are the health care plans?

Several customized plans are offered on the government's Affordable Care Act website, healthcare.gov.

The different plans are spread about among four different levels ranging from bronze to platinum. The higher the level the more your health care costs - but remember, the more you pay monthly the less your co-pay will be should you get sick.

All plans include ten essential benefits, as listed on the government's website:

- Ambulatory patient services
- Emergency services
- Hospitalization
- Maternity and newborn care
- Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment
- Prescription drugs
- Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices
- Laboratory services
- Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
- Pediatric services, including oral and vision care

What will it cost?

Each plan is different, but here's an example based on the Kaiser Family Foundation's calculator: An individual who makes $50,000/year and purchases a 'silver' (midgrade) package will pay $2,100/year for the coverage, or $175/month.
