Tim Skubick: Snyder willing to rub elbows with the left for Detroit's benefit

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

There it was in striking black and white:  "Subject to final details from the White House."

The one-liner was at the bottom of a Gov. Rick Snyder media advisory and ultra conservatives are wondering why is the GOP governor waiting around for "details from" of all places, "the White House."

Because that's who Rick Snyder is.  Another chance for  bi-partisan cooperation and it was not the first, nor the last.

The gig was designed to have the governor in the same room with key members of the Obama administration namely the Attorney General, the HUD honcho and Transportation Secretary and other hangers on to help Detroit.

It was shades of Gov. Chris Christie  walking around with the President himself in the aftermath of New Jersey's tragic hurricane Sandy.  The occasion in Motown centered on the financial hurricane that threatens to bury the city and the rest of the state with it.

And just like Mr. Christie, Mr. Snyder is not about to put on his GOP partisan hat and tell the White House folks to take a hike because they were riding in to deliver some badly needed financial largesse.

This comes on the heels of the GOP governor appearing on another stage a couple of weeks ago with another prominent Democrat Rep. John Dingell (D-Dearborn.)  The gov's media guys never release this stuff but dollars to donuts some Republican griped about that, too

"How dare he appeared with Dingell?" you could almost hear the righties ask out loud.

Because everything in this town is framed in a political context, there are many who believe the governor would actually damage his own standing with moderates and independent voters if he did not welcome the Obama team to down-trodden Detroit.  Given a chance to play to his base, once more this governor will be perceived as off-base by those conservatives who voted for him last time, but may take a hike next year when given a second chance because he cuddles-up to Democrats way too often.

It's a political risk this governor appears more than comfortable with otherwise he would have been in the governor's residence on the island and not rubbing elbows with Mr. Holder and friends and not collecting $300M for the city.

Well lookie here. Schauer 45%. Snyder 43%. Now before all you Democrats start popping champagne corks, some sobering analysis of the numbers.

The I's have it. Here we go with the popular wisdom schtick again. It says that independent voters hold the key to the outcome in the race for governor.

About 75% of the school children across the country are already in school but not in Michigan, where the tourism industry has convinced lawmakers to delay the opening of school until after Labor Day.
