Michigan Senate passes US-made flag purchase bill for cemeteries

(WJBK) -

The Michigan Senate has unanimously approved a bill to require local governments to buy U.S.-made American flags and flag holders for veterans' grave sites if those flags are competitively priced with non-U.S.-made products.

If the local government purchases a flag or flag holder elsewhere it must make that fact public on its website.

The bill passed unanimously and without debate Wednesday.

This bill is an amendment to the current law that requires public and private cemeteries to provide flag and flag holders for the graves of veterans who served in the armed forces of the United States for the making and designation of the graves for memorial purposes. Those institutions are also to provide a penalty for the removal or destruction of those placed flag or flag holders, the bill says.

The bill now goes to the state House for consideration.
