SceneTap uses facial recognition to jazz up your night out: Momentum Awards

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Local entrepreneurs are a huge part of creating jobs and growing the economy in Chicago, building a foundation for the future. SceneTap founder Andrew Niemann is one of those entrepreneurs.

They say every great idea solves a problem. When you're a guy in your early 20s, a big problem can be figuring out the best place to go to for your night out, especially when you don't who will be there.

A few years back, Niemann and his friends decided to figure out how to do just that – know "who's" inside a bar before you go. SceneTap makes going to bars and restaurants a bit more interesting.

"It's an application that can tell you in real time," Niemann explained, "the crowd size, the gender ratio and even the average age of everyone hanging out at a given bar or restaurant - at that moment."

SceneTap was launched as a cool idea. But high-tech tools like facial-recognition software are what make it work super cool.

The software takes a real-time reading of the features it picks up on people's faces. The app can determine whether it's reading a male or female face and make an age prediction as well.

With surprising accuracy, you gender, age, colors you're wearing and even your mood – Are you smiling? - are all recorded and sent right to your smartphone. When you click on the bar or restaurant you want to go to, you'll learn exactly who is inside.

The app works for every type of person, whether you want a bar full of fun young women or a mellow spot to hang out after work.

"For me, even at my age now, when I want to go out and watch a Bulls game or a Bears game," Niemann told FOX 32 News, "the last thing I want to do is stand shoulder to shoulder, fighting with everyone for a drink."

Scene-tap is an example of what's driving our local economy, small, high-tech businesses creating jobs and a healthier economic future.

The company's goal is in Chicago and a handful of other cities. But the long-term goal is to take the app global!

SceneTap won $10,000 and the "Chicago's Coolest Start-Up" Momentum Award Wednesday night.

Anna Davlantes had the privilege of hosting the event. FOX 32 News will be profiling local entrepreneurs all week long, putting a spotlight on this important and growing part of our local economy.
